Our Special Time: Bedtime Rituals. Part I – Gratitude
Share
I’ve always had bedtime rituals with my kids. Our special quiet time that helps them get ready for sleep. Some I invented, and others they created. One ritual lasted for years, and some are still new.
Like most parents, our typical daily schedule is busy — full of noise, tasks, and endless to-dos. We often wish for more quality moments — when the phone is away, the screens are off, and our focus is entirely on connection. We know our kids need it — and honestly, we do too.
As a psychologist, I’ve also incorporated bedtime rituals when working with parents. When used intentionally, these quiet moments can be deeply meaningful. There are so many bedtime rituals you can create, and the design depends on the goal or need you want to address.
It might be with the child you struggle with the most — or the one who behaves so well you sometimes forget they need your attention too.
It can be designed to promote better sleep, ease fears, build confidence, or simply deliver the message: “I see you. Let’s make space to be together.”
💫 Why Bedtime Rituals Matter
- The routine brings calm and predictability — it’s soothing for kids to know how the evening will unfold.
- They create a clear mark in the day — helping children say goodbye to their busy day and gently shift into rest.
- They open communication — bedtime becomes a time for sharing thoughts, stories, or feelings.
- A ritual can aim simply for these benefits, or it can serve a deeper purpose: easing worries, building confidence, and strengthening bonds through simple, intentional moments.
I believe deeply in the benefits of bedtime rituals — those quiet, intimate moments that nurture closeness and calm.
That’s why I’ve decided to write a series of posts sharing my favorite ideas and small practices.
Each post will focus on one core value/goal as the theme for the bedtime routine.
This post will be focusing on- Gratitude

Why Gratitude?
Research shows that practicing gratitude has many potential benefits - and when combined with the calm, intentional moments of a bedtime ritual, these benefits become even stronger:
- Improve sleep and mood – Focusing on positive experiences can lower stress and support better sleep, even without a bedtime ritual. Pairing it with a calm evening routine makes the effect even more powerful.
- Strengthen emotional connection – Practicing gratitude together can strengthen family bonds, encourage empathy, and support positive social interactions.
- Enhance well-being – Gratitude helps reroute brain pathways to notice the positive aspects of life more naturally.
- Boost self-esteem – It reminds children of their strengths and what they contribute to others.
- Build resilience – Gratitude helps children cope with challenges by reinforcing their sense of competence and perspective.
💛 Ideas for Your Gratitude Rituals

-
Gratitude Box – Write or draw one thankful thought or a category of appreciation that needs to be completed. For example: “I’m thankful for something my friend did for me today.”
Another option: create small notes with categories such as school / friends / music / after-school sports / food / me. Each night, pick a note and find something kind or appreciative to say about it. - Whispering Gratitude – As the lights go out, whisper one thing you loved about your day — or something you appreciate about each other.
- “Thank You” Hug – End the day with a long hug and a soft “Thank you for today.” It’s simple, grounding, and full of love.
-
Gratitude Journal – Here, you gain all the benefits of a bedtime ritual and of practicing gratitude, while also modeling thankfulness and nurturing one of the most important skills: open communication. As a mutual ritual, you can each share one (or more) things from your own gratitude journal or take turns noting something that made you smile or feel thankful.
